The newborn’s vitamin D status is largely determined by the mother's level of vitamin D during pregnancy. If the mother’s status is uncertain, vitamin D supplement should be started before birth. Breastfeeding mothers should also take vitamin D supplements because of increased nutritional needs associated with lactation.
